Incentives for employing automotive workers

The Back to Work Scheme provides employers with up to $7000 for hiring eligible retrenched auto workers in Victoria. An additional amount of up to $4000 is available for providing accredited training to these eligible employees.

Employers of retrenched automotive workers can claim back to work payments for employees who started work any time from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2018. Claims must be lodged within nine months of the employment start date.

Ex-auto workers are available to work

Due to the end of car manufacturing, retrenched auto workers are available for work now. Auto workers have a range of skills developed through working in the automotive supply chain and cover a wide range of occupations, including:

  • machine operators and assembly workers,
  • technicians and trades workers,
  • sales and administrative staff, and
  • professionals, including engineers, accountants and managers.

These workers are highly skilled and  have extensive experience in practices such as LEAN manufacturing, just-in-time and quality systems.

More than half have over 10 years' length of service with their previous employer.

Auto workers have skills and capabilities learnt from the automotive industry that can benefit businesses in a range of sectors.
