What makes a Priority Precinct?

Priority Precincts hold unique potential to create more jobs for more people as Melbourne grows. Planning for that now is the best way to maintain Melbourne’s character and liveability. As well as ensuring all residents have reliable and affordable access to jobs services and infrastructure, wherever they live.

The precincts are long-term projects that, over their lifecycle, will offer people, business and industry benefits like:

  • excellent transport connections
  • choice of affordable housing
  • world class local study options
  • services and infrastructure access
  • sustainable, high amenity environments.

Each Priority Precinct has different strengths to build on and all hold strong opportunity. Some will advance Melbourne’s reputation for innovation, research and discovery. Others will be world exemplars of urban renewal, achieving the 20-minute neighbourhood vision of Plan Melbourne.

Our place-based precincts work

More people than ever are choosing Melbourne for their home. We’re planning for what the city will look like in future. A place where people have the jobs they need, and vibrant, sustainable places to live, work and enjoy.

In a change from past approaches, a multidisciplinary team coordinates place-based policy, planning, design, investment and delivery across government. This work is focused on people and characterised by jobs creation, affordable housing, environmental and social benefits.
