Footscray is Melbourne’s newest Priority Precinct. It has strong connections with the city, greater west and regional Victoria. Footscray has a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant creative community. Nowhere is this more visible that at Footscray Market. This local fresh produce centre is both an urban hub and visitor destination.

Elsewhere in Footscray, two Victoria University campuses offer degree, postgraduate and TAFE courses. The precinct waterfront includes river parklands with expansive Port Melbourne views.

Footscray Priority Precinct is just 5km west of Melbourne CBD.

Footscray in future

Footscray will be a locally, regionally and globally connected western gateway. The precinct will be a welcoming and resilient place of opportunity for people to live, work and study.

Melbourne metro will make Foostcray more accessible than ever. The new hospital will bring almost 15,000 more people to the precinct yearly. As well as driving new jobs.

Most current jobs in Footscray are in the accommodation and hospitality sectors. Strong health care and social assistance jobs growth will occur in Footscray.


The number of homes in Footscray is growing. The precinct has almost 2,000 more homes today than in 2011.

Footscray Park is one of Australia’s biggest and best-preserved Edwardian parks. Other public spaces in the precinct include Whitten Oval and the Maribyrnong River parklands.
