$5.8 million to fix mobile black spots across regional Victoria

Published: 22 March 2019

The Victorian Government has announced $5.8 million to jointly fund 30 new mobile towers that will eliminate mobile black spots for regional communities, giving them access to better mobile coverage and increased safety.

The new towers will increase 4G coverage and will be co-funded by the Victorian and Federal Government's in partnership with Telstra and Optus through round four of the Mobile Black Spot Program.

The location of the towers is the result of extensive consultation between Victoria's nine Regional Partnerships, local government, Emergency Management Victoria, Telstra and Optus.

Engaging the nine Regional Partnerships allowed a more informed approach to tower locations and ensured funds were directed to communities most in need of better connectivity, taking into account public safety, value for money and economic development.

The Victorian Government had committed $55 million to 194 new regional mobile towers, which will connect 20,000 premises for the first time.

More than 130 of these towers are complete and this new announcement means the Victorian Government is now funding 224 towers across the state.

The Victorian Government is also working on projects to improve connectivity across the regions, like free public Wi-Fi in Bendigo and Ballarat and mobile towers and repeaters to improve coverage for commuters on regional rail.
