Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre (AMMC)

About the AMMC

The Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre (AMMC) is a $20 million Victorian Government initiative that will support the growth of medical technology (medtech) manufacturing in Victoria, creating new jobs, enhancing skills and increasing investment.

The AMMC will help underpin Victoria’s leading global position in life sciences and medical research. For Victorian medtech companies, the AMMC will support their access to local health procurement opportunities with government and strengthen their manufacturing capabilities.

Victoria’s medtech sector generates $21.4 billion in revenue and $3.5 billion in exports annually. The sector is recognised for its supply chain strengths, innovative and multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.  The sector is supported by an internationally competitive medical and clinical research base and strong product design and engineering capabilities.

When health supply chains were disrupted from the COVID-19 pandemic, Victorian medtech companies demonstrated their collaborative capabilities in scaling up production to address critical medical shortages.

This responsive manufacturing base makes the Victorian sector well positioned to compete for a bigger share of the fast-growing global medtech market. The AMMC will work with the sector to identify and realise opportunities for growth, strengthen health supply chain resilience and develop solutions for future healthcare challenges.

In 2022, the AMMC will work with the sector to deliver on three strategic priorities:

  1. Growing local content in health procurement.
  2. Building the competitive capability of Victorian medtech manufacturers.
  3. Strengthening collaboration, connectivity and insights on demand and supply opportunities across government, industry, health systems and business.

Industry Capability Network Victoria partnership

The AMMC is partnering with the Industry Capability Network Victoria (ICN) who have appointed an ICN Medtech Adviser to work with Victorian medtech companies to identify new opportunities on local health procurement projects.

About the Victorian medtech sector

Victoria is one of the world’s leading life sciences locations with 18 world class medical research institutes across medtech, biotech, pharmaceutical and digital health industries.

Victoria’s medical research sector employs 6,000 people and supports more than 30,000 jobs across institutes, universities and industry.

More broadly, the state is a centre for life sciences education and skills development, with more than 100,000 life sciences and pharmaceutical professionals based in Victoria.

Medtech start-ups are also on the rise in Victoria, representing 20 percent of new startups in the state in 2021 - the highest startup activity by sector - according to LaunchVic’s 2021 Startup Genome Report.
